A group of animal rights activists took off their clothes and covered themselves in blood to plead for meat-free diet. The incident took place in the busy Sant Jaume plaza in Barcelona, Spain.
Barcelona has become the world's first city to declare as vegan-friendly. A group of 20 members of animal rights group "AnimaNaturalis" gathered at the busy city center to make a dramatic request and set an example for the people in the country to stop exploiting animals and make them suffer, Daily Mail reported.
The demonstration was not just restricted to slogan chanting and poster display in front of a busy crowd. However, the protesters stripped down and soaked themselves in fake blood before placing themselves on huge polystyrene trays. They were also wrapped in a clingfilm to look similar to how packaged meat is sold in supermarkets. The bizarre packaging was labeled "carne humana," which means "human meat."
"We want to draw the attention of the authorities of the city, which pledged in March to join global initiatives such as Paul McCartney's 'Meatless Monday', but have not implemented anything yet," Aida Gascon, the director of the animal rights group told The Independent. "The environmental, health and ethical implications surrounding the consumption of meat is an issue that cannot be ignored anymore."
The group director further said that it would be great if the city government can agree to assign at least one day in a week for campaigning in support of a diet that excludes any product derived from animals.
Barcelona declared itself as a vegan-friendly city in March 2016. The city also published a vegetarian guide for its residents and urged them to stay vegan for at least one day in a week. However, despite the efforts, the members of the animal rights organization have felt the need to indulge in more rigorous efforts so that the message is clear across the entire population of the city.
In fact, AnimaNaturalis believes that the city government has not taken enough efforts to fulfill the pledge that it took almost two months ago.
