It looks like the much awaited fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is not happening anytime soon. As a result, fans are not too pleased with Golden Boy Promotions as they are seemingly trying to avoid matching their prized fighter against the Kazakh boxer, Golovkin.
Both boxers have been on a roll as Alvarez has won five straight matches while Golovkin remains undefeated. The Mexican boxer just defeated British boxer Amir Khan via knock-out during their May 7 match-up while Golovkin did the same thing with Dominic Wade on April 23 with an impressive round two knock-out.
With Alvarez and Golovkin dominating their respective divisions, it seems like a no-brainer that both fighters should finally square off. However, Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler said that Golden Boy Promotion is not interested in closing a deal with them which makes the dream fight unlikely from happening.
"I can confirm that nothing has been forthcoming from Golden Boy since they informed the WBC of their decision," Loeffler told World Boxing News. "We are still hopeful that the fight with Canelo can be made and are open to continuing the discussions as soon as Golden Boy are ready and willing to do so."
When the news reached Alvarez' camp, they immediately denied the opposing promotion's statement of them stalling the fight against GGG. However, fans should not get their hopes too high as there is still a lawsuit needed to be resolved.
"I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible," Canelo's camp representative told Bleacher Report.
Should both fighters go their separate ways for the meantime, Golovkin is likely to face Billie Joe Sanders, who is another undefeated star in his division. Also, there is Chris Eubank Jr. who also has an impressive record of 22-1. The latter have openly expressed his interest to fight the Kazakh boxer and he will be available once his fight with Tom Doran on June 25 is finished.
Alvarez, meanwhile, is linked to boxers such as David Becker, Erislandy Lara, David Lemieux and Golovkin among others. Here is a video of Alvarez victory against Khan.
