After fighting through a rain-delayed match with Roberto Bautista Agut, Novak Djokovic is now gunning for a spot in the semifinal round on Thursday, facing a familiar foe in Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. Meanwhile, the other semifinal seat will be contested by up-and-coming stars David Goffin of Belgium and Dominic Thiem of Austria.
Djokovic vs. Berdych (7:00 a.m US ET): Live Streaming on Tennis Channel, Roland Garros Radio /Scores
Preview: As what tennis analysts have been saying throughout the tournament, Djokovic would never forgive himself if he still doesn't win this year's Roland Garros.
With the withdrawal of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the road to the crown has never been easier for the world's no.1. Then again, that doesn't guarantee a title for the Serbian.
In the final eight, Djokovic will be facing Berdych, the man he defeated 23 times out of 25 head-to-head encounters, yet remains dangerous on any given day. How much of a threat is Berdych to the joker? Let's say he won't be a pushover. In fact, Berdych had already beaten Djokovic on this surface. It happened three years ago on the red dirt of Rome.
Prediction: Djokovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4
Goffin vs. Thiem (7:00 a.m US ET): Live Streaming on Tennis Channel, Roland Garros Radio / Scores
Preview: Two of the hottest up-and-coming stars today, Goffin and Thiem will slug it out to determine not only who will advance to the semifinals but also for some bragging rights as the alpha dog of the next generation of tennis stars.
Thursday's match marks their seventh head to head encounter with Goffin taking four of his previous six matches with Thiem. Goffin was also the player who eliminated the young Austrian in round of 62 of Australian Open championship.
On the other hand, Thiem has been making his presence felt in the ATP circuit with sensational wins against top stars, including Rafael Nadal in Argentina last February. Thiem played Goffin on clay twice, winning their latest match on the red dirt last year at Gstaad Open.
Prediction: Goffin taking 3-1 victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
