Because of continuous torrential rains in southern China, a number of provinces are now flooded. Thousands of residents had to be evacuated and displaced, while an estimated 14 to 25 people have died.
Many of the victims of the flood come from poor and remote regions of China. About 4 million people from 10 Chinese provinces are estimated to be affected by the inundation and landslides since heavy rain started on Monday, according to the Civil Affairs Ministry of China, reported USNews.
In Jiangxi Province, water is waist-high, causing residents to push cars that floated, while some vehicles were swept away. The monsoon seasons of May through July always hit China’s south, but this year, it was particularly went.
According to Financial Express, in Hunan Province, four people died, six are missing and 157,000 residents evacuated. The death toll in Shanxi Province is one, while it is nine people in Guizhou Province where nine others are missing and 65,600 people were evacuated.
State media reports sad that water levels in some major rivers are higher than the 1998 flood in which 180 million Chinese were affected by the high levels of water.
In preparation for the heavy rains, water from the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River was released in recent weeks. The ministry estimated that direct economic losses from the inundation has exceeded $550 million.
