On June 17, Daybreak Game Company announced to the gaming fraternity that it was going to close down "Planet Side" and "Legends of Norrath" game servers. The games' closure is rumored to happen due to both their current unpopular nature and their age.
"Planet Side" had launched back in 2003 and is due for shutdown on July 1 at 4 p.m. PT, Day Break website reported. The game is reportedly regarded as a project with a crucial history to both Daybreak Games and the developer team of its successor.
"While we have run the game for free since 2014, due to evolving business needs and technical requirements it has become necessary to conclude this service." The company wrote on its website. The closure, nonetheless, is not entirely due to financial issues, but a move to eject less performing games.
Meanwhile, gamers will still enjoy playing "Planet Side 2," which was released on Windows PC back in 2012 and on PS4 in 2015. The multiplayer is a free-to-play first-person shooter, which uses a different game engine from the one used by the first installment of "Planet Side."
In August, however, the company plans to shut down yet another of its games dubbed "Legends of Norrath." The game has not been in active development for a period, and its online collectible card game servers will close on Aug. 17 at 12 p.m. PT. The company will also stop its sales of "Legends of Norrath" booster packs on July 18.
"Legends of Norrath" was launched in 2007 and has been playable in "Everquest" and "Everquest 2" in separate, stand-alone client availability. Earlier this year, Daybreak, however, canceled "Everquest Next," which was it's next-gen Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO).
It was supposed to launch first on PC and later come to PS4 and Xbox One. But the company terminated it under the reasons of it not being "fun" and not meeting the expectations of both its developers and the gamers alike, Dual Shockers reported.
Daybreak's most recent release of MMO is known as "Landmark," a sandbox world-creation franchise that was initially tied to "Everquest Next."
