"Finding Dory" box office record is flying high as the film crossed $136 million in its opening weekend. The film has broken the record in the animated film category of all times.

The "Finding Nemo" sequel recorded the highest box office opening in the history of any US animated movie, Sydney Morning Herald reported. The exact figure for North America is $136.2 million, in the opening weekend. It crossed "Shrek the Third," which grossed $121.6 million in the opening weekend. The last highest weekend grossing movie for Pixar was Toy Story 3, at $110.3 million.

The movie is currently showing across 4,000 movie theaters all over US and it has received a huge welcome from the audience. The figure was beyond the expectation of Pixer. "Finding Nemo" was quite a popular animated movie, and the audience has again showed their love for another underwater movie, "Finding Dory".

Dave Hollis, Disney's executive vice-president of distribution mentioned in a statement, "They did it this time again, telling an extraordinary story that lives up to and exceeds expectations." "Finding Nemo" was a big hit too. It grossed $70 million in the United States, back in 2003.

"Finding Dory" opening weekend is particularly over-exceeding for all expectation thanks to its offshore record of $50 million. In China, it scored Pixer's biggest opening with whooping $17.5 million to begin with. In Australia, the amount crossed $10 million.

"Finding Dory" was released exactly 13 years after "Finding Nemo" and the movie took up the journey six months in the reel. The movie seems to have brought in the nostalgia for many. Hollis mentioned, "At the time, it was the biggest animation release of all-time and left an indelible mark for great reason."

Hollywood has a flair for sequels and criticism is quite common. However, it has proved once more that sequel can bring in more money than original.

One more sequel that released recently was "Conjuring 2", securing no. 2 spot in the offshore opening. The movie raised $41.9 million in the opening weekend and crossed the $100 mark in 11 days. "Warcraft" secured the third position this week, Deadline reported.
