A new Hallyu, “Uncontrollably Fond,” premieres on July 6. Like “Doctors” which started to air on June 28, the two new Korean dramas hope to duplicate the success of “Descendants of the Sun” which was viewed by millions in South Korea and billions in China.
However, the chances of new dramas breaking the record set by the 16-episode blockbuster are bleak now that the producer is not only planning a Season 2 for TV but a "Descendants of the Sun" movie, reported AsiaTimes.
The daily identified Zhang Yi-bai, a Chinese director, as being appointed to oversee production of the movie version of “Descendants of the Sun.” While with Season 2 of the TV version, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo has been ruled out as lead stars because of their tight schedules, speculations are high that the two – because of their box-office drawing powers in China, South Korea and other Asian countries – would be the best stars of a movie version
With a Chinese supervisor, the possibility looms that Zhang Yi-bai may opt to hire Chinese actors instead for the lead roles. But Asia Times pointed out, “Whoever is chosen to replace the Song-Song couple in the proposed movie would find it difficult to recreate the heart-melting romance that Joong-ki and Hye-kyo gave us in the superhit drama with the same effect, leave alone transcending it.”
Given those circumstances, AsiaTimes believes the main cast for the movie version would be the same. Allowing fans to see the pair on the big screen would also fuel more speculation of the Song-Song couple either admitting having a secret romantic relationship or developing one as they shoot the movie.
However, Bitbag reported on Sunday that there are speculations that the movie version because of Song Hye Kyo’s alleged involvement in the separation of Lee Min Ho and Suzy Bae. Song Hye Kyo was perceived as the alleged third party for the break-up of the popular couple particularly after Lee Min Ho expressed a desire to work with Song Hye Kyo, while fans opened a MinKyo Facebook fan page.
