Activision has confirmed that the "Call of Duty: Roman Wars" video game proposal was never considered seriously and that the concept did not even make it to the prototype phase of development.
One former employee dubbed as Polymus who was supposedly involved heavily in the development of the could have been Call of Duty: Roman Wars video game has revealed details of its development eight years ago. Polymus said that the idea was lost because Activision at the time did not want to "over-saturate" the Call of Duty brand.
Call of Duty: Roman Wars would take players, as the title suggests, back to the time of Roman warfare. Polymus said that players could have been able to start as a grunt in the empire's force and up to Julius Caesar himself with the Tenth Legion, Games Radar has learned.
Polymus even claims that they have already made a demo and that it made its way to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. However, the time was not for them as the idea was rejected by Activision.
The game could also have changed the very mechanics of a Call of Duty game. Polymus said that the demo showed both the third-person and first-person point of view for the player.
With regards to the platform, Polymus believed that they were targeting the Call of Duty: Roman Wars for an Xbox One launch. Coincidentally, the game could have ended up looking like today' Ryse: Son of Rome title which has received mostly negative feedbacks from gamers and critics.
One Activision spokesperson said that the Call of Duty: Roman Wars video game was not "seriously considered" and that it did not even make it past to the prototype stage, GameSpot reported. The concept was reportedly just proposed by a former employee at the time.
The game was built on the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 title but Polymus said they used a modified version of the famous Unreal Engine for "rapid prototyping." A gameplay demo of the game has been uploaded to YouTube.
Activision's statement regarding the Call of Duty: Roman Wars proves that they do not intend to make such a game. They do not seem to be interested in past events unlike EA and DICE with their Battlefield 1 that takes players back into World War One.
