First place-ranking tennis players Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic won the 103rd Edition of the Australian Open Tennis Championship in Melbourne. The tournament was one of the four Grand-slam championships that gave out around $33 million award prize, according to Daily News Egypt.
The Australian Open Tennis Championship is second to the most popular tennis tournament after US Open Tennis Championship. The history of these tournaments goes back to the 1905's.
Novak Djokovic is the world's number one ranking tennis athlete in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), he won the singles competition against Andy Murray who ranked sixth internationally.
Djokovic has played four matches and won them all straight and is not on his best tennis play yet, ESPN Tennis reported.
Serena Williams, who is currently ranking first internationally, won the first place in the women's singles category against Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
Williams path to the championship has been filled with challenges while playing against Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck and Russian Vera Zvonareva, eventually winning on the second round. On the third round she played against Ukraine's Elena Svetolina, and win again. She moved to the 4th round and triumphed against Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza.
Sharapova scored 1300 points to maintain her second international place garnering a total score of 8210 points while Williams scored 2000 points to be added to her current points totaling to 9776 points.
This is William's sixth title in the Australian Open Tennis Championship and her 19th in the Grand Slam Championships with a total of 59 Grand Slams.
