In a quite shocking announcement, MTV has revealed the nominees for 2016 Video Music Awards (VMA), but the toast of 2015, Taylor Swift, is nowhere to be seen.
MTV made the announcement on 26 July, Tuesday with two nominations each for Kanye West and Calvin Harris while Beyonce took the cake with a whopping 11 nominations and Adele closely follows with 8 nominations. However, Swift was nowhere to be seen, which is definitely a stark contrast to the smooth sailing she had last year, when she won the Moonman trophy for her video "Bad Blood."
The 26-year-old singer had received 10 nominations for her video last year and was leading the pack of honorees, according to US Weekly. But this year, she has none in her kitty and this might be because she was flooded with awards last year. Though the six-time VMA winner has "Wildest Dreams," "Out of the Woods," and "New Romantics" to her credit, all have been overlooked.
On the contrary, Beyonce has been feted with 11 nominations for "Lemonade," which brings to mind the infamous 2009 incident that took place at the awards ceremony. That year too, Swift had won the award for best female video, but Kanye West had rudely criticized the choice of the winner and said that Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.
And now that Swift is involved in a fight with West, it looks like the nominations could not have come at a worse time. It seems the rapper has been vindicated and to add insult to the injury, he is also a nominee along with Swift's ex Calvin Harris, according to the Daily Beast. Insiders also claim that Harris is planning to join West on stage during the awards night to embarrass his ex.
Recently, Harris joined West's wife and reality television celebrity Kim Kardashian on Jennifer Lopez's early birthday party and even sang the lyrics of one of the rapper's songs with her. Well, Swift is really in a bad situation and one can only hope that all this does not lead to bad blood between the singers. Fans have already had too much.
