Ontario, Canada's most populous province and home to the nation's capital city, Ottawa, has launched a new "Ontario-China Young Scientist Exchange Program (YSEP)."
The goals of the exchange program are to develop long-term research collaborations between Ontario and Chinese institutions; encourage the development of leadership skills among YSEP participants and create future "science ambassadors" between Ontario and China.
This program was created by a joint Memorandum of Understanding between Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and China's Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang during the Premier's mission to China in November 2015.
By promoting science and technology collaboration with China, Ontario has developed more than 70 Ontario-China partnerships and generated more than $200 million investments in research and commercialization.
Young scientists from Ontario are getting ready to begin their three-week exchange program this August in China. Meanwhile, Chinese participants started their exchange program in Ontario in July.
China and Ontario each fund three-week academic visits for early career researchers to enhance and support scientific and technological cooperation.
Developing international scientific relationships is part of Ontario's economic plan to build it up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs.
The four-part plan includes helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. The plan makes possible the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and transit in Ontario's history. It's also investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses.
The plan is helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement.
Ontario's five-year, $400-million Business Growth Initiative is helping to grow the economy and create jobs by promoting an innovation-based economy, helping small companies scale-up and modernizing regulations for businesses.
