Mozilla released on Wednesday Firefox 48, its latest version of the browser which is more responsive and less prone to freezing for those who love to open multiple tabs.
The latest version of Firefox 48 include the multi-process for Firefox for Desktop, or the Electrolysis or e10s, which provides separate processing by the browser of web content and browser component, similar to how Chrome has been for years.
With the new under-the-hood feature, if a web page uses too much memory, Firefox controls would not freeze up, including its tabs, buttons and menus. Mozilla tested the e10s with different test versions of the browser since August 2015, reported PCWorld.
However, e10s is only enabled, so far, on a limited number of desktops, but it would expand to include all Firefox 48 users over time. To find if the Electrolysis is enabled on your browser, type “about: support” on the address bar and hit “Enter.” Then under the sub-heading “Application Basics,” search for “Multiprocess Windows.” If it states “1/1 (Enabled by default),” the e10s is in the browser.
In The Mozilla Blog, Nick Nguyen, vice president of Firefox Product, wrote that only one percent of the new version of Firefox has e10s, but if things go as expected, Mozilla would ramp it up to almost half of the Firefox Release.
Nguyen also revealed more improvements to the bar that when a new query is entered, more suggestions will show up and there would be a wider view of suggestions across the screen, making suggestions easier to read.
For web video watchers using Android-powered devices, while playing a video within Firefox on an Android gadget and a call comes in, the device automatically pauses the video to allow the user to focus on the call, Nguyen said.
