Mayim Bialik revealed that prior to joining the cast of "The Big Bang Theory (TBBT)," she has not seen a single episode of the hit comedy series. The actress, who plays Amy Farrah Fowler, first appeared in the Season 3 finale of the show and was promoted to series regular after that.
According to the Daily Mail, the 40-year-old Bialik made the revelation while she attended the "#BlogHer2016 Experts Among Us Conference" in Los Angeles. She was interviewed by SheKnows Media president Samantha Skey and talked mainly about her website, Kveller, which focuses on her life as a Jewish mother of two.
The interview, however, turned to Bialik's current role in TBBT, for which she had earned four Emmy nominations. Aside from not being familiar with the comedy series, the actress also admitted that she first thought TBBT was a game show because she had heard about it and was told that her name was mentioned during the first season.
The actress shared that the acting resume she handed out for the TBBT audition probably helped her land the role, ET Canada noted. She recalled that she included "Speaks Spanish, Yiddish and Hebrew" under the miscellany section and also wrote that she has a PhD in neuroscience.
Bialik said that TBBT co-creator Bill Prady was not sure what to make of this particular credential and asked if it was "for real." Bialik took a hiatus from acting and obtained her PhD in neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2007. Her character in the show ended up being a neuroscientist because of this.
The actress cited Prady as having previously explained that they made Bialik a neurobiologist so she could "fix things" in case they were wrong. However, the actress pointed out that any good actor needs to pretend to be what he is not, so she thinks that they should not have thought very much of her.
Bialik started acting when she was a child. As a teenager, she also played the title character in the five-season NBC sitcom "Blossom." She took a hiatus from acting to pursue neuroscience and to focus on motherhood.
The Daily Mail cited Bialik as saying that she got back to acting because her health insurance expired after obtaining her degree.
