The Pirate Bay and ExtraTorrent are now the go-to sites for torrent fans following the shutting down of both the KickassTorrents and Torrentz.eu. There are KAT mirror or clone sites that claim to be as near-identical KickassTorrents replacements but a new report warned that the most popular, KAT.am, has morphed into haven for scammers.
When KickassTorrents was closed down, KAT.am quickly gained attention from torrents fans and copyright holders alike. The spotlight trained on the mirror site turned to its advantage - the KAT.am domain got suspended though the site operators immediately switched domains, pointing its service to Kickass.cd and Kickass.mx.
However, TorrentFreak learned that the suspended domain name was actually offered for re-registration and some entities wasted no time in acquiring KAT.am then set it up anew as a KickassTorrents mirror. In the new site that is handled by new operators, users are asked to enlist as members for full access of the site features.
"The signup page redirects to a scammy portal, and requires people to enter their credit card details if they want a free trial," TorrentFreak reported, adding that "this has nothing to do with the original KickassTorrents site."
As it appears now, the new KAT.am "has all the signs of a classic pay to download scam, which usually ends in disappointment for those who sign up," the report added.
Torrent users are advised to keep a safe distance from KAT.am and for that matter, from most KickassTorrents clones and mirrors that in all likelihood are imposters. Surely, they are the gateway to free digital downloads like the old KickassTorrents was but the risks of using them are way too high.
For the best download alternatives, the safe bets remain the old timers in the torrenting scene and any of ExtraTorrent or The Pirate Bay quickly comes to mind. ExtraTorrent is proven a reliable provider and home to well-known release groups that indicate of rich torrent library. In recent days, the official Facebook page has been deleted but there is no indication that the service will be offline anytime soon.
More so in the case of TPB, which arguably is now the most popular file-sharing site following the KickassTorrents demise. The Pirate Bay only reclaimed the position it ceded to KAT during its extended downtime in late 2014. But the resilient torrent player now appears stronger than ever and is the best alternative for KickassTorrents and Torrentz.
