In the past weeks, torrent fans saw KickassTorrents went offline and followed shortly by meta-search site operator Torrentz.eu. As a result, download clones and alternatives gained popularity in the absence of KAT and Torrentz but it is The Pirate Bay that likely will end up as last man standing in the torrenting scene.
Other sites, in fact, are competing to take the place of KickassTorrents, which prior to its surprised exit was rated as the most visited file-sharing site in the world. But according to TorrentFreak, torrent iconTPB is best positioned as the ultimate KAT replacement. And sure enough, just days after the U.S. government took possession of the numerous KickassTorrents domains and arrested the site's alleged owner, The Pirate Bay reclaimed its old post.
TorrentFreak reported that when KAT closed down, similar sites saw their traffic surged to new highs and the likes of ExtraTorrent, RARBG, YTS.ag and 1337x now occupy the four slots that completed the top five torrent players as of August. Unsurprisingly, The Pirate Bay is again the "King of Torrents," the report said.
TPB climbing back to the top is hardly a shock. The site ruled the torrent scene since 2009 and has collected millions of fans across the world for its rich catalog of free digital downloads. But The Pirate Bay's notoriety also proved its share misfortune. Copyright holders and authorities took notice and TPB became the number one takedown target.
In late 2014, the site went offline and the downtime extended into months, sparking speculations that TPB is no more. But resilient as it is, The Pirate Bay resumed its business and with KAT suffering the same fate that TPB once encountered, it is again on the top of its game and likely become the last man standing.
But the threat remains and the possibility is there that TPB, ExtraTorrent and YTS.ag will soon follow KickassTorrents and Torrentz. In such a scenario, TorrentFreak suggested in a separate report that torrenting will remain alive and kicking thanks to new and small players that will take the place to be vacated by the torrent giants.
And these file-sharing sites will be visible with meta-search sites like Torrentz doing their work - indexing the millions of torrents for users to find and download. True, Torrentz.eu is no more but clones gladly came out to continue what Torrentz has started - making life easier for torrent fans.
So it could be that The Pirate Bay will soon be the last man standing but when the time comes that TPB will be forced to exit torrenting will still exist and torrents fans can thank the growing list of Torrentz clones for that.
