The Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin showdown will eventually happen. However, Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez is not sure when will fans see the two boxing superstars go at it inside the boxing ring.
Golovkin, who owns a perfect 35-0 record with 32 knockout victories, has said all along that he wants a shot at Alvarez. He was actually mandatory challenger to Canelo, when the Mexican was still holding the World Boxing Council middleweight title. However, Alvarez opted to relinquish the title instead of defending it to GGG.
Based on what Canelo has been showing recently, Sanchez thinks that Alvarez is not planning to fight Golovkin. He quickly took back his statement, saying that it will happen but when Golovkin is already old and washed up.
"I thought Canelo was never going to fight us, at least not now anyway," Sanchez told Fight Hub via BoxingScene. "It may happen when Gennady is 60. For right now I didn't think he's going to fight us."
Sanchez clarified that he does not think Alvarez is afraid of Golovkin. In fact, he strongly believes the Mexican boxing superstar wants to do it for the fans. However, the business of boxing is preventing the fight from happening.
Previous reports indicated that Golden Boy Promotions does not think it is wise to stage the Alvarez-Golovkin fight at this point, knowing that a loss for Canelo will hurt his stock. There is reportedly a verbal agreement between the two camps to make the fight happen in September next year, but Sanchez thinks it will not come to fruition.
Alvarez, who has an impressive 47-1-1 record with his only loss coming at the hands of Floyd Mayweather in September 2013, will face Liam Smith on Sept. 17 at AT&T Stadium in Texas. Canelo is favored to win convincingly against his British foe.
Sanchez said that he is also putting his money on Canelo but will not be surprised if Smith pulls off a shocking upset. But on a normal day, the veteran trainer said that Canelo will have some rough moment before dominating Smith.
"Liam Smith is a big guy, he's a durable guy," Sanchez said via BoxingNews24. "He's not as talented as Canelo. Canelo should win the fight, but I think Liam Smith will scare him."
