"The Witness" will be getting a new patch to gain PlayStation 4 Pro exclusive features. The development team is also working on adding another support to the video game for the other consoles.
Lead developer Jonathan Blow wrote on the official website of the video game that his development team is working on a PS4 Pro patch for it. Their upcoming patch will be about visual quality, since their video game already runs at a consistent 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 4. He clarified that things might change when it gets released and the specifics he mentioned are not absolute promises.
Blow said that when the patch goes live, players will be able to play the game on their PS4 Pro in two modes. These new modes will depend on the TV or monitor that they are currently using.
For owners who will use the upcoming console with a 4k display, the video game will render 1440p or possibly higher. It will also keep a consistent 60 FPS during gameplay. The images will then be upscaled to 4K, and they will draw text, menus, and other UI at native 4K resolution.
Blow thinks that they might be able to achieve higher resolutions than 1440p, but there will be a price for it. They can boost the resolution of the main scene to a greater degree, but they might have to cancel boosting the resolution of the resolutions in water. They will be posting updates when they finalize the specifications.
For console owners who will use the PS4 Pro with a 1080p display or lower, the game will render a scene at 1080p. It will also increase the antialiasing quality from 2x to 4x MSAA, and it will still have 60 FPS during gameplay. The lead designer revealed that the team is exploring additional visual quality increases.
The team is also working on HDR support for the game. Since all PS4 consoles will get the firmware upgrade to enable HDR, their game will also get one to enhance its visual display.
Blow told IGN in an interview that the patch will be received by players on Nov. 10 if all goes well with the development. The patch release date is also the launching date for Sony's new HDR and 4K-ready PS4 model launch.
