Del Potro has been enjoying an impressive run in the tennis scene this season after strong performances at major tournaments in the past months. But Delpo, who currently ranks No. 64 in the world, admitted that while he is finally able to compete at a high level, there have been struggles for him playing that way and keeping himself healthy throughout the season.
"It's nice to have two numbers again despite the thing that makes me most happy is that I am at a high level. My big challenge was not only to play tennis but do it well and being healthy through all the season. Being in the last part of the season, I can say I made it," Del Potro told Clarin via Tennis World USA.
Del Potro's ranking has fallen to 145th after he endured three operations on his left wrist. But at his first Grand appearance Slam in more than two years, the Argentine upset fourth-seeded Stan Wawrinka at Wimbledon last month.
Following his strong showing in Church Road, Del Potro competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics with great confidence, defeating the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal en route to Silver Medal finish in Rio.
Del Potro got seeded at the recently-concluded US Open, where the 27-year-old Argentine yet again showed great resolve winning a major title, but fell short in the quarterfinals against eventual champion Stan Wawrinka.
Del Potro will next compete at the Davis Cup semifinal round and will try to help Argentina get past defending champions Great Britain who is led by non-other than world No. 2 Andy Murray. Del Potro, who will open against Murray in the best-of-five tie, hopes he could be a factor at the tournament, especially after already getting the chance to face Murray this summer.
"I did not have the chance to rest since Rio and it will be another effort but you know that to win a medal is always a big challenge. Now I hope to be competitive in this tie," Del Potro said. "We approach this tie with humility and excitement hoping to qualify for the final."
