A house in the small town of Braunau am Inn in northern Austria where Adolf Hitler was born will be demolished to stop it from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine.
The yellow, three-story building where Hitler was born is the former Gasthof zum Pommer or Gasthof des Josef Pommer. The original address of the building was Salzburger Vorstadt 219 when Adolf Hitler was born here at 6:30 p.m. on April 20, 1889, Easter Sunday.
The house has stood empty since 2011, however.
Braunau am Inn is a charming town with a population of about 17,500 people on the south bank of the Inn River that separates Austria and Germany.
Most people forget Hitler was born an Austrian to Austrian parents. The Austrian-born Führer became a naturalized German citizen on Feb. 25, 1932 after being appointed a civil servant in Braunschweig, a city in the state of Lower Saxony in Germany.
Hitler's being awarded German citizenship was a precondition for his holding any public office in Germany.
Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933.
"The Hitler house will be torn down. The foundations can remain but a new building will be erected. It will be used by either a charity or the local authorities," said Federal Minister of the Interior Wolfgang Sobotka.
He said the decision was based on the recommendations of an expert committee tasked with deciding what to do with the controversial building.
The federal government's decision to destroy Hitler's birthplace comes after years of bitter legal controversy involving Gerlinde Pommer, whose family has owned the house for over a century.
In the early 1970s, the Austrian government signed a lease with Pommer and turned the house into a center for people with disabilities. The arrangement, however, ended five years ago when Pommer unexpectedly refused to grant permission for needed renovation work.
She also rejected a purchase offer made by the Federal Ministry of the Interior now led by Sobotka. Exasperated with Pommer, the government last July approved legislation to seize the house from her.
