Microsoft's Xbox Project and Sony's PS4 Pro are coming and both consoles will feature 4K resolution architecture. Microsoft and Sony, the two tech giants behind the mid-generation consoles, are taking clearly diverse approaches with their higher-end gaming consoles.
Both the Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Pro consoles will feature 4K functionality meaning that gamers will be able to play games and watch films in 4K resolution. Currently, the Xbox One S has HDR for games and 4K for video with a 4K upscale for games, while the PS4 Slim features HDR for games and video.
According to Expert Reviews, it is hard to know the piece of hardware been developed, but Microsoft's 6 TFLOPs may enable the Scorpio to produce exciting 4K content. On the other hand, the PS4 Pro handles 4K with technical trickery. Gamers of the current batch of 4K games for the PS4 Pro have been using a cutting-edge upscaling method, allowing a 2 by 2 pixel to be extrapolated into a 4 times equivalent. This ends up increasing the resolution from a native 1080p to 2160p.
It is rumored that the intelligent upscaling makes a slight softness same as the pin-sharp precision of a native 4K presentation. Xbox planning lead, Albert Penello, explained in an interview with The Guardian more about the Scorpio's "true" 4K capabilities. "On the games, we gave ourselves a goal for what performance level we wanted to build in the box, and our goal was to be able to give true 4K games: the same engines running on Xbox One being about to run in Scorpio on 4K," he said.
Penello added that they noted very clearly that it is up to the developers on how they want to take advantage of that power adding that some developers put more focus on effects, some on frame rate, and some on resolution. "It is up to them what they want to do," he said.
The PS4 Pro's 4K capabilities are enough for living room gaming, more so, considering the Xbox Scorpio which is likely to be more expensive when it comes. In addition, the PS4 Pro can play both YouTube and Netflix in 4K HDR. However, the does not feature a 4K Blu-ray player and if a user have a stack of 4K Blu-Rays, then Xbox One S may be a better choice.
Meanwhile, Xbox's head Phil Spencer talked about the Scorpio on his Official Twitter profile. He revealed that the team is making wonderful progress and they are feeling good about the schedule which implies that the Xbox Scorpio may be released in time.
@RBeckerath I'm in a day long review of where the team is on Scorpio right now, amazing progress and we are feeling good about schedule.

PS4 Pro is slated for a Nov. 10 2016 release date by Sony while on the other hand, Microsoft plans to make its new console available in the holiday season of 2017. The console's hardware is still very much in development, hence, it is possible for that date to be pushed back to 2018.
