JYP girl groups TWICE and Wonder Girls are battling against each other to be the Best Female Group in MAMA 2016.
Both girl groups were nominated for the award this year. Chances are TWICE will beat their sunbae group from the same label. Wonder Girls had a comeback earlier this year with the title track sounded like a reggae song. Unfortunately, the song did not quite catch on to netizens.
Wonder Girls was once the hit girl group of JYP's camp that reached the peak of popularity since their debut in 2007. They even tried their luck in the U.S. market and collaborated with US-based singers like Akon. However, the group suffered line-up changes several times and Sunye and Sohee permanently left the group. In 2015, the girls were back as a band and welcome back Sunmi as a member. Now, Wonder Girls is composed of Ye-eun, Sunmi, Hye Lim, and Yubin.
Meanwhile, TWICE held two comebacks this year. One in July with "Cheer Up" and another in October with "TT". Both songs become phenomenal hits and broke records. With their phenomenal success, many people claimed that TWICE is the second Girls' Generation.
Thus, with their track record and huge fanbase, there is a chance that TWICE will beat Wonder Girls. TWICE debuted in October 2015 after the JYP survival show, Sixteen. The final cut left Jihyo, Nayeon, Jungyeon, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, Momo, Sana, Mina, and Tzuyu. Since their debut last year, the girls had two comebacks - one in July with "Cheer Up" and in October with "TT".
On another note, other nominees for Best Female Group are: Red Velvet, MAMAMOO, and GFriend. Many are speculating that the battle is among Red Velvet, TWICE, and GFriend. The awarding ceremony will be held on Dec. 2, 8 p.m. EST, at the AsiaWorld-Expo Hong Kong.
