The teaser video for the "Fullmetal Alchemist" live action film has been released, and it features actor/singer Ryōsuke Yamada as the alchemist Edward Elric.
The trailer is only 30 seconds long, but it shows some interesting, computer-generated scenes, including a Transmutation Circle. While it does not divulge much, the teaser is enough to let fans have a glimpse into what they can expect.
The text in the trailer, according to Anime News Network, says, "The time has come ... Two brothers' great journey. The legend finally begins."
"Fullmetal Alchemist" is a manga written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa and was published from 2001 to 2010 in the Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine. It focuses on Edward who, along with his brother Alphonse, try to perform the forbidden human transmutation alchemic technique when their mother dies because of a plague. The ritual backfires, however, and Alphonse's body and Edward's left leg are destroyed. The latter binds his brother's soul to a suit of armor in an attempt to rescue him. He then becomes a State Alchemist and goes on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone, which can restore their bodies.
The movie was filmed in Italy and principal photography wrapped up in August. According to director Fumihiko Sori, who also helmed the "Ping Pong," he wanted to stay loyal to the source material as much as possible.
"I want to depict something that follows the original work as much as possible," Sori said, according to a report in Kotaku in May. "The cast is entirely Japanese, but the setting is Europe. However, their race and nationality isn't expressed in a specific form."
Apart from Yamada, the "Fullmetal Alchemist" live action film also stars Tsubasa Honda as Winry Rockbell, Dean Fujioka as Roy Mustang, Misako Renbutsu as Riza Hawkeye, Kanata Hongō as Envy, Jun Kunimura as Tim Marcohm, among others.
The film will be released in Japan in 2017 courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.
