With "House of Cards" entering its fifth season, there are a lot of rumors about the show's fate on Netflix. There are speculations that the Kevin Spacey-starrer would end with Frank Underwood's death, following the same ending that happened in the original British "House of Cards" series. The question now is which one of Frank's close allies would betray him in "House of Cards" Season 5.
The Netflix political thriller has proven itself to be very different from the U.K. version of "House of Cards," which ended with Claire hiring an assassin to kill Frank. Frank was growing more and more uncontrollable and unhinged, and killing him was the only way to stop him.
At the start of Netflix's "House of Cards," Frank and Claire worked together to satisfy their lust for power; however, as the show went on, their relationship turned sour and they no longer had the same sense of intimacy and confidence in each other as a married couple. At the end of "House of Cards" Season 4, Claire expressed her intention to run for Vice President of the United States, making her a potential rival for Frank.
Michael Kelly, who stars as Doug Stamper on the show, tells Deadline that radical changes are coming to "House of Cards" Season 5.
"I remember [producer Beau Willimon] saying to me, 'Look, I can have you and Francis twirling your mustaches forever and destroying everything in your wake. People love it. But I want to challenge myself. I want to see what happens when these people fail.'"
"House of Cards" Season 5 is rumored to see Frank's downfall, and Claire's eventual rise to power. Interestingly, Claire was able to break the fourth wall in the fourth season, something only Frank has been able to do throughout the show's entirety. This might be an indicator of bigger things to come for Claire, particularly a spinoff series.
According to Express.co.uk, Michael Dobbs, who wrote the original "House of Cards" novels and now an executive producer on the Netflix drama, said that a "sister series" is on the table.
"That is a very interesting question and one that we are putting our minds to actively because every show comes to a natural end," Dobbs says about the rumored spinoff.
