George R.R. Martin, author of the books on which the massive HBO series hit "Game of Thrones" are based, was disgusted with what happened to the New York Jets on Dec. 5, Monday. He vented his frustration on his online journal the 41-10 loss of Jets to Indianapolis Colts.
"Jets Game? What Jets game?" Martin wrote. "Did the Jets play a game? On Monday Night Football, you say? Surely not."
The author denied the ones playing were not the Jets but the Weehawken High School Junior Varsity in Jets uniforms. He is a fan of the Jets, visiting to training camps the last two summers. The team gave him VIP treatment, according to ESPN.
Martin is not alone on his frustrations of the Jets' fate. Many of the team's fans are furious, even putting the blame to second-year coach Todd Bowles and calling that he will be fired. Yet, analysts see that the team's problem is in personnel, not coaching.
In early 2015, owner Woody Johnson hired Mike Maccagnan as general manager and got Bowles. The team had poor drafting at certain positions for so long, having no ready-made or in-house replacements at quarterback, cornerback, edge rusher, receiver and offensive tackle. Maccagnan restocked through the draft which worked for a season but some players like LT Ryan Clady and injured WR Eric Decker did not play as expected this year. It was also amidst the unexpected retirement of D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
The team's personnel has let Bowles down who could execute his wanted defense with cornerbacks who are not good enough. Furthermore, the team could not have an offense with bad offensive tackles and a slumping quarterback. Its performance however, is not a reflection of Bowles, as player Brandon Marshall confirmed on Dec. 7, Wednesday.
"That's why we're still together because [Bowles is] real," Sports Illustrated quoted Marshall telling reporters. "He tells it like it is and he's a man of his word."
Marshall described Bowles as a mix of Bill Parcells and Lovie Smith. He added time is needed to build things. As a new regime is being brought in, it is said a year or two is needed to do it. He shared there is no division between coaches and players in their team and their accountability is promising.
