The first full-length trailer for "Spider-Man: Homecoming" has been released. While just under three minutes it manages to showcase several of the key characters, including Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark aka Iron Man and Michael Keaton as the main villain, Vulture.
One of the key differences that this film will have from previous iterations of "Spider-Man" is that Peter Parker aka Spider-Man's school crush is not Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson. Instead, the trailer establishes he has interest in Liz Allan, portrayed by Laura Harrier.
Singer-actress Zendaya is also shown as Michelle, in which she gives a witty response to Peter and his friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) and calls them losers. It is possible she will have the nickname "MJ," the Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Ned Leeds is also portrayed as Peter's roommate and classmate. In the original comic books Leeds was Peter's co-worker in the Daily Bugle. This iteration takes inspiration not only from the comic book Leeds but also by merging in characteristics of Ganke, friend of "Ultimate Spider-Man" Miles Morales.
A short scene in the trailer also showcases Bokeem Woodbine as Shocker and there is also a quick preview of Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes aka Vulture. Donald Glover's mysterious character is also shown standing by someone using what appears to be Vulture's equipment although it is uncertain if his means he is playing a villain or an innocent bystander being manipulated.
The film is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it picks up during and after the events of "Captain America: Civil War." One of the opening scenes in the trailer depicts Spider-Man stopping a robbery and he is already wearing the suit given to him by Stark, The Verge reported.
Tony also makes several appearances in the trailer, aiding Spider-Man as some form of mentor. However, when Spider-Man addresses his problems of Vulture attacking the city Stark tells him to back off and let the authorities, possibly the Avengers, deal with the problem.
By the end of the trailer both Spider-Man and Iron Man are shown travelling through the city, indicating Iron Man will be fighting for at least one sequence in the film.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" releases on July 7, 2017.
