World Wrestling Entertainment superstar John Cena hosted "Saturday Night Live" for the first time and people have mixed reactions on the 15-time world champion's performance in the late-night comedy show.
Cena dressed as a girl and a karate master in some of the sketches and did a Rob Gronkowski impression, showing he is not just an actor for action movies but for comedy as well.
Though people on social media are impressed with the 39-year-old's performance, with some saying that Cena killed his impressions while some saying they did not expect him to be that funny, critics like Derek Lawrence of Entertainment Weekly could not help but give the latest SNL episode a B-.
The last three episodes prior to Cena's guesting focused on the surprise win of president-elect Donald Trump and have been considered big ones. Lawrence wrote that while Cena's enthusiasm and charm were there, he "couldn't completely save the episode" from its shortcomings and bad writing of the show's sketches.
Cena appeared in "Trainwreck" and "Sisters," and people believe his SNL stint might have propelled his name into more appearance in Hollywood films. Forbes reported that the WWE is skeptical with Cena's frequent showing in 2017 as he continuously receives outside projects, like that of the SNL hosting job.
Although people are comparing Cena to former wrestler and SNL host Dwayne Johnson, others believe the macho man did a decent job in showing his comedic range throughout the show.
Cena has also made appearances in other television shows like "Manhunt," "Madtv," "Deal or No Deal" and "Parks and Recreation" to name a few. January next year, the film "Surf's Up 2: WaveMania," wherein he voiced the protagonist along with other WWE superstars, will be released. Another 2017 film, "The Wall," where Cena is also a part of, is still filming.
