John Cena made his triumphant return to SmackDown Live this past Tuesday after a three-month hiatus. During his absence, there were a lot of rumors regarding his future including a possible heel turn, becoming a part-time superstar and a mini-beef with Vince McMahon.
As recapped by WWE.com, Cena cut an intense promo at the start of SmackDown. He put over A.J. Styles, Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin while also challenging whoever the WWE champion at the Royal Rumble.
It turned out to be Styles and their match at the Royal Rumble has been confirmed. There was a heel turn tease at the end of SmackDown Live and it might be the right time to do it, per The Metro. The report noted that Cena's transition to Hollywood is the perfect way to turn him bad.
It will create a buzz that has not been seen since Hulk Hogan turned heel in 1996. However, it's just purely speculative at the moment and nothing is set in stone. The WWE tends to change their minds regarding storyline plans on a daily basis.
On the other hand, Cena also cleared the air on his part-time status and rumored beef with the WWE chairman. He told John "Bradshaw" Layfield and Renee Young on Talking Smack (h/t Wrestling Inc.) that he regrets calling out The Rock for being a part-time superstar.
The 39-year-old superstar noted that he now gets what The Rock is doing and he knows the locker room is feeling the same towards him now. He added that he is going to continue doing what's best for the WWE whether it's him wrestling or being in Hollywood representing the company.
Also, Cena made it clear that there is no beef between him and WWE management. He called the rumors "crap" and revealed that he is in a great relationship with Vince McMahon. The rumors of the Cena-McMahon rift started when the 15-time WWE world champion accepted another offer from Hollywood.
Nevertheless, Cena is back and he is primed to have one more WWE title run before he gets his Hollywood career going. He is set to face Styles at the Royal Rumble, and possibly at Elimination Chamber.
As for WrestleMania 33, there is a strong possibility that he might face The Undertaker. It was the original plans for this year's 'Mania but it was canceled when Cena suffered a shoulder injury. Now, Cena is healthy and he is ready for the Road to WrestleMania 33.
