Could it be that the jailbreak community will soon see the release of a JB tool that is based on iOS version 10.2? The question arises as iOS hacker Luca Todesco teased that the latest Apple mobile operating system remains open to be cracked and unlocked.
Picking up on the recent Twitter posts from Todesco, Redmond Pie reported that the Yalu iOS 10 jailbreak maker "recommends those interested in jailbreaking to save SHSH2 blobs for iOS 10.2 right now in case an iOS 10.2 jailbreak does show up in future."
"Suggestion: keep 10.1/10.2 blobs real close on pre7 64 bit," one of Todesco's Twitter posts was reported as saying.
But to be clear, Todesco has no known ongoing work that would lead to an iOS 10.2 jailbreak release. The security research has admitted that jailbreaking 10.2 is not in the drawing boards right now though it can be assumed that the same KPP technique employed in Yalu JB tool can be replicated in putting together a modified 10.2.
As Redmond Pie pointed out, Todesco came up with the Yalu jailbreak partly due to the iOS 10.1.1 root exploit that was detected by a recent Google Project Zero report. So it's highly likely that a JB tool based on 10.2 will pick up from Todesco's jailbreaking efforts so far.
And the best guess, according to the same report, is someone else will finalize the iOS 10.2 jailbreak and Todesco would not mind since the hacker has already made clear that such project is not in his mind right now. Who the jailbreak maker could be remains a mystery though.
But such a scenario was suggested recently by Stefan Esser also known as @i0n1c. The long-time jailbreak scene mainstay dropped a clue last week that somebody is working on a jailbreak to crack iOS 10.2. No names though were mentioned.
There are the usual suspects, however, and one that comes to mind is Team Pangu. Sure, the Chinese hacking team has been silent for months now on the matter but the Redmond Pie report seems convinced that the group remains committed to providing the next jailbreak release.
Also, this is in line with the recent hints issued by Cydia creator Saurik or Jay Freeman - that Team Pangu has an ongoing credible work that points to a future iOS 10 jailbreak release and that the group has the talent to follow through on a promised JB tool.
