It is no secret that video game movies come with high expectations from the fans of the source materials. A lot of the people who come to see these movies are highly critical of the end product. As a result of this, more often than not, movies that are based on video games end up as box office flops.
What filmmakers need to understand is that just because a video game franchise is making a lot of money, does not mean that a film that is based on the franchise will have a similar money making capacity. What usually goes wrong is how those who work on the film fail to understand that it is near impossible to create the same comprehensive universe that made people fall in love with the video game in the first place. Many people believed that "Assassin's Creed" would finally be worthy of being called a good video game movie, according to the Independent.
This has not deterred film producers from investing large amounts of money in the production of video game-related movies. The latest film to possibly be afflicted by this "video game curse" is the new "Assassin's Creed" flick starring Michael Fassbender.
The "Assassin's Creed" star revealed that he was unfazed by the concept of such a curse and was not even aware that it existed in the first place. This may seem a bit odd, as an increasing number of big name films based on video games have been released in just the past couple of years. Some notable efforts to make a good video game movie include "Tomb Raider," "Warcraft," and "Hitman."
"By then I was already involved so there was nothing I could do," Fassbender said about his thoughts on the "curse" in an interview with the BBC. "It would be worse if all the previous adaptations had been successful and this one wasn't," he added.
Film critics currently have mixed reviews about "Assassin's Creed." Although filmgoers and critics alike have taken some positives from the film, the video game community still seems to be harsh in their reviews, as they continue their search for what they deem as a good video game film.
