Actor Tom Hiddleston recently won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for his role on "The Night Manger" on Sunday. However, his remarkable win was met with criticisms due to his acceptance speech, described by netizens as a classic example of "humblebrag."
Following the backlash, Hiddleston posted an apology on his Facebook page on Monday. In the said post, the actor maintained his speech was "inelegantly expressed" due to nervousness and that he intended "to salute the incredible bravery and courage" of those who work in the difficult situations like in South Sudan.
"In truth, I was very nervous, and my words just came out wrong. Sincerely, my only intention was to salute the incredible bravery and courage of the men and women who work so tirelessly for the children of South Sudan, who continue to find hope and joy in the most difficult conditions," Hiddleston said on his Facebook page on Monday.
In a report by Entertainment Weekly, Hiddleston talked about his recent trip with the United Nations Children's Fund to South Sudan in his Golden Globes acceptance speech. He recalled being approached by a group of doctors and nurses from humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders who told him they had binge-watched his series "The Night Manager" in their shelling the previous month.
The entertainment news website added that the actor was "moved" by "the idea that we [actors] could provide some relief and entertainment for people ... who are fixing the world in the places where it is broken," Hiddleston said. He ended his speech by dedicating his win "to those out there who are doing their best."
According to Fox News, Hiddleston's speech was followed by negative feedback from fans and fellow celebrities who found his speech as "boring" and "self-serving".
