"Girl Meets World" Season 5 may still be a go, but big changes will be in store for the sitcom. Despite the recent cancellation by Disney Channel, series creator Michael Jacobs believes that there is still hope for a renewal because of the loyal fans.
While speaking with TV Line, Jacobs revealed that there are ongoing talks regarding the fate of "Girl Meets World." The show, which is currently on its fourth season, is expected to air its finale, "Girl Meets Goodbye," on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. EST.
Ahead of this, Jacobs said that the preliminary talks are taking place because of the viewers' shocking reaction to the cancellation. But if "Girl Meets World" Season 5 will still push through, it will most likely no longer be on Disney Channel.
"There are talks underway, but we are at the very very beginning stages. And I can tell you it is because of the audience's reaction to the cancellation that there is interest in other places," he said.
Meanwhile, Jacobs went on to explain why some networks may be interested in renewing "Girl Meets World." According to him, networks are after audience share and viewership so the fact that there are thousands upon thousands of audiences clamoring for a renewal means there will be people who will be supporting the show.
This move translates into the network getting what they want in return which is high ratings and consistent viewership. "Networks want to do something to gather an audience. The fact that there is an audience who has been so loyal says a lot," he said.
In other news, "Girl Meets Goodbye" will see the return of the original cast members featured in "Boy Meets World." They will be playing an important role in helping Riley (Rowan Blanchard) and Maya (Sabrina Carpenter) make tough decisions about their lives and their relationship with each other.
"Girl Meets World" Season 4, episode 20 will air on the Disney Channel on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. EST.
Tonight at 6:00 -- We're as old as we want. So where will we be? What if it's somewhere else? Girl Meets Sweet Sixteen. And then, Goodbye.
