The creative team behind "The Guardians of the Galaxy" is doing a major revamp to the comic book storyline. While "The Guardians of the Galaxy" may be set on Earth in the meantime, the story might soon bring back the intergalactic heroes to outer space.
The "All-New Guardians of the Galaxy" are bringing some major changes to the superhero team. The core team has been reduced to five core Guardians, with Groot stuck in his small form and the others have no idea why he is not growing back to maturity.
Drax, on the other hand, is a retired destroyer. He now subscribes to pacifism. Although he still itches to destroy, he is holding that part of himself back.
According to comicbook.com, the "All New Guardians of the Galaxy #1" will pick up after the events in "Grounded," which is the final arc in the current "Guardians" series. In the upcoming story, the Guardians will be involved in a war waged by two Elders of the Universe, the Grandmaster and the Collector. The war is centered on the rivalry between the Collector and Grandmaster, particularly with respect to the artifacts they want to have in their separate collections.
"We want to put these guys into new cosmic situations. We're right in the middle of a heist in the first issue," writer Gerry Duggan said about the new arc. "I think, even though they're functioning well as a team, they're each looking forward to handling their own business, so they might be feeling gravity's pull apart."
While the Nova Corps has not made been active in the current "The Guardians of the Galaxy" series, it will be reconstituted in the new story. With the Nova Corps back, there will be a lot more opportunities for the Guardians to get into trouble.
In the meantime, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will be the first offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year. According to Digital Spy, the sequel is set just two months after the first film.
"It's both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some of the characters," James Gunn said about the sequel. This perhaps refers to the discovery of Peter Quill's parentage.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will be out on May 5.
