The "Fire Emblem" series has primarily flourished on the 3DS but a new title has been announced for the Switch and Nintendo now confirms a mobile game is due too. "Fire Emblem Heroes" will be available for both the iOS and Android in February.
Just like the 3DS and console games, "Fire Emblem Heroes" will be a turn-based tactical RPG with a strong emphasis on story and characters. The main draw for the mobile title is that players have the option of summoning characters from previous games.
Players will earn orbs after each battle and these orbs can then be used as currency to purchase new heroes. However, for players who do not want to grind there is the option to use real money through in-app microtransactions.
The price of orbs may still change but as of the time of writing players can spend $2 for three orbs or $75 for 140 orbs, Gamespot reported. Summons are also random but players still have the option of choosing a color which determines their weapon preference.
The gameplay, as shown in the official trailer, is very similar to the traditional games like "Fire Emblem Awakening" but now has a vertical stage design. This is due to the vertical design of smartphones compared to the horizontal screen of the 3DS or a television screen.
Returning from previous games is the weapon system in which swords defeat axes, axes defeats lances and lances beat swords. However, perma-death is not going to be featured in the game and is one of the few titles in the series where it is absent, Kotaku reported.
This will mean characters that die on the battlefield are not gone forever. The perished heroes will be usable again for the next fight, which reduces the difficulty of the game. Previous "Fire Emblem" games featured perma-death and thus dead characters remained that way.
Unlike "Super Mario Run," this title will be free to play. "Fire Emblem Heroes" is launching for both Android and iOS devices on Feb. 2. The iPad and iPhone version was initially dated TBD but an update from Nintendo confirms it is also launching in February alongside the Android version.
