‘Legion’ series: Will other ‘X-Men’ characters make cameo appearance in Dan Stevens-starrer?

In a few weeks' time, fans will get to see the premiere episode of the upcoming X-Men series "Legion." The show will focus on mutant David Haller, portrayed by "Downton Abbey" star Dan Stevens.

The newly-released TV spot for "Legion" shows David's struggle with his mental health and his superhuman abilities. The character is diagnosed with schizophrenia and while seeking treatment, he learns that the hallucinations that have plaguing him for his entire life may have resulted from his mutant superpowers. David has psychic powers, which allow him to absorb the personalities of the people he scans.

While "Legion" is a character from the "X-Men" comic book series - he is the son of Professor Charles Xavier - showrunner Noah Hawley explained that he wants to focus on David's story, meaning viewers ought to put aside their expectations for X-Men cameos and references to the Marvel Comics in general.

"With the X-Men comics, there are a lot of alt universes, so that has allowed me some leeway," Hawley tells Variety. "And obviously it's a sort of origin story for David, but none of the other characters that I've surrounded him with are from the comics. It's sort of an invented world."

While such may be the case for "Legion" in its early outings, Hawley said that there is still a possibility in the future for all the "X-Men" releases, both in TV and movie, to collide. The stakes are, considering there is another still untitled "X-Men" series ordered by Fox recently, with Ben Singer attached as director. Singer is also an executive producer for "Legion" together with Simon Kinberg and Jeph Loeb. Even so, Hawley's goal for now is to establish the world of David Haller and substantiate the character.

"I think it's important for us to establish this as a fully realized world with fully realized characters," Hawley says in a separate Variety interview. "It does connect and it can connect, but I'm not relying on that. I have to prove myself."

"Legion" also stars Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, Jeremie Harris and Amber Midthunder. The series will premiere on Feb. 8 on FX.
