Some retailers and carriers still offer the popular LG Nexus 5 after Google discontinued selling the smartphone in its revamped Google Store.
The tech giant separated its gadgets from Android products offered in the Play Store. Alongside its update is pulling the plug on some devices, including the Nexus 5. The devices that are prominently available in the new store are the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player streaming box, Android Wear smartwatches, Chromecast, Chromebook Pixel and Nest's smart thermostat.
Google previously confirmed that the Nexus 5 will be available in Google Play and selected retailers until the end of Q1 2015. It seemed that the days of the device are numbered as Google has no plans to replenish the stock of the handset.
Meanwhile, some units of LG Nexus 5 are still available in some brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers. For example, Best Buy is offering the handset under Sprint for $99.99 with two-year commitment to the carrier. The smartphone is also available in Amazon and eBay wherein consumers can find different offers for the handset and they can haggle for a lower price. These sellers are simply selling off the remaining inventories.
As a refresher, Nexus 5 packs a 4.95 inch Full HD screen display, quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC paired with 2GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera, and 2,300 mAh battery capacity. The handset is available in 16 GB and 32 GB of internal storage variants. It was originally announced with Android 4.4 Kitkat, but is reportedly receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop OS update.
Until now, LG Nexus 5 is still popular than the new Nexus 6 because of its friendly price tag that starts at $349. Google originally planned to lure buyers by creating a high-end Nexus 6 and making it available in more stores and carriers.
