The Detroit Pistons are reportedly in discussions with the Orlando Magic on the possible NBA trade according to league sources. It remains to be seen if something will be done before Feb. 23, the last day teams can trade up and tweak their rosters.
The Magic are the second team to inquire about Reggie Jackson, ESPN reported. The Minnesota Timberwolves were also linked before, a deal that involved Spaniard Ricky Rubio.
Piston coach Stan Van Gundy doused water on those trade talks and assured Jackson he would not be traded. Another team said to be interested in the 26-year-old guard are the New Orleans Pelicans though the franchise has already passed on the idea.
Landing Reggie Jackson will not be easy considering he holds an $80 million contract. Aside from Augustin and Green, the Magic may have to add another player to satisfy salary-cap requirements.
Just recently, the Magic dealt Serge Ibaka to the Toronto Raptors for Terence Ross. If consummated, this would be another major move for Orlando.
Reggie Jackson did start this season on a sour note. He had to address knee and thumb injuries when the 2016-17 NBA season started, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Since his return, Van Gundy admitted that the Pistons have been struggling. This was later on seconded by some Pistons players that included center Andre Drummond. Drummond, one of Jackson’s best friends, admitted that the team lost its groove but also said he still had Jackson’s back.
From here, it will be interesting if the stand of Van Gundy will change as far as Reggie Jackson trade talk is concerned. There seems to be conflict from within with the 26-year-old looming as the odd player out.
Coming off an injury, it only seems normal that Jackson would be struggling to get back his old form. There is no telling when the old Reggie will be back. If the Pistons and Magic come up with an agreement, Jackson may have to rebound his career in Florida instead.
With several days to go, Jackson joins the long list of top NBA names who could be donning a new uniform. Will it be in Orlando?
