A possible swap involving Derrick Rose of the New York Knicks and Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves failed to materialize when the former wanted some perks to the trade. The Knicks wanted something extra so the T-Wolves decided to nix the deal.
A straight swap would have made sense if the salaries of both Rose and Rubio are to be taken into consideration, Bleacher Report reported. With Rose being a former NBA MVP and better all-around game, asking for something extra like picks makes a bit of sense.
A shortcoming for Rubio is that he doesn’t have decent outside shot. But in terms of facilitating and making his teammates look good, he may hold a slight edge over D-Rose. In terms of health, both have had their share of setbacks though Rose may have experienced it a bit more. But the thing here is that Rose has proven his value with an MVP plum while Rubio is still on the rise.
A Derrick Rose coming to the Minnesota Timberwolves would have been grand since it would have reunited him with former coach Tom Thibodeau. If there is any person who knows how to bring out the best in the all-star guard, Thibs is it.
Hence, the best the T-Wolves can do right now is wait until the 2016-17 NBA season is over. They do have another chance of getting Rose through free agency. The 28-year-old is set to test the free-agent market and is confident that he can still snag a max contract, NBC reported. It remains to be seen though if Thibodeau would be open to handing him another lucrative deal given his history of injuries.
Until then, the New York Knicks will have to make do with their lineup. Carmelo Anthony was the prime name believed to be moving but nothing transpired. He is in a similar case now with Derrick Rose. With the Knicks’ intent to trade him, it seems clear that Jackson is ready to move on without the two all-stars.
For now, the Knicks have to shelve those issues and see up to where they can go. They are currently 23-35 in the Eastern Conference but have a shot at the magic 8. Minnesota is almost at the same vote with the same record and similar chances at a NBA playoff berth.
The video goes in depth to see why the Derrick Rose for Ricky Rubio trade failed to materialize.
