Jide Technologies recently announced a new android based software, Remix OS, which will enable android smartphones to power PC enabled apps. The new feature will basically make a smartphone function as a PC when connected to a Display, mouse and a keyboard.
The concept is not entirely new, given that Microsoft (Microsoft continuum), the Andromium and Ubuntu's convergence already made similar attempts. What makes Jide's Remix OS special is the fact there would be no divisions between apps, in that all apps would be for android, 9to5 Google reported.
The shortcomings of this kind of technology was reflected by Microsoft's continuum where users were limited to very few Universal Windows platform apps. The Ubuntu convergence on the other hand, had no limitations although not fully effective.
The new operating system is called the Remix OS on Mobile (ROM), while the feature itself is the Remix singularity or Remix OS. This feature works in a way that when the ROM is installed on a smartphone, it gets a phone specific UI, and when connected to a monitor, it works as a PC enabling access to all apps ranging from games to Microsoft word which can be controlled using a keyboard and mouse.
According to The Verge, Remix OS integrates android in a way that allows the operating system to function as a desktop with features like a task bar and floating windows. Although this technology was not received well in the past, Jide's modifications and enhancements offer a solution to users who would like their android phones to cut on costs of buying a PC.
Jide has been working on the Remix OS for three years and have successfully had four million downloads in that period. With the fast advancements in technology, Jide is confident that the Remix OS will still be relevant this year.
With only a few months before the Remix OS is ready for launch, Jide's main challenge is finding the right OEM partners who would incorporate their technologies to their smartphones. It is speculated that Jide's target market for Remix OS is the Nexus 5X and 6P android smartphones.
