Taylor Momsen, 23, was first known for playing Jenny Humphry in the The CW series "Gossip Girl" from 2007 to 2012. She then evolved into a rock star as the frontwoman of the rock band The Pretty Reckless and a young musician who values music in its purest form.
In an interview with From Hero to Zero, Momsen talked about the influence of technology on the music business. She noted that it is all about streaming nowadays not about record sales.
"I think currently, music is cyclical," Momsen explained. "Right now, it's like being in the '50s again where it's all single-based and the album is slowly disappearing, which is sad to me."
For Momsen, what she loves is the album and not just one song. A song cannot capture everything so it is about the whole body of work but this is not really how music is viewed nowadays, she said.
According to Momsen, music is currently going through a transitory state along with the world and it always comes back. She was also asked if consumers expect the perfection that comes with digital production.
This is expected, Momsen replied. The bad side of this, she pointed out, is the fact that along with lined-up guitar solos are musicians' voices put through the machine and sound the same.
If there is no human element to the music, it will not connect to the people, Momsen added. She explained that music is such a lifeline of humanity because the listeners can hear the person behind the note along with the pain, the struggle and the striving to accomplish something greater than himself or herself.
What Momsen finds sad is the big loss caused by digital manipulation of music. In another interview with Vogue in 2016, she said that rock 'n' roll music represents freedom it has no limits and boundaries.
