"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" celebrated its 20th anniversary in March this year, and fans have been feeling a bit nostalgic about the now-cult classic.
The supernatural-themed show was a consistent hit from its debut in 1997 to its final episode in 2003, and is still considered to this day as one of the best TV shows of all time. The show centers on Buffy Summers, portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is chosen as the Slayer and tasked to fight evil forces.
"The most important thing to me is that I have had people come up to me and say the show made me feel different about what they could be, about what they could do, about how they respond to problems, about being a female leader," series creator Joss Whedon told EW about the show and its lead character.
Here are five current shows that will help cure your "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" nostalgia.
Supergirl
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" introduced viewers to a strong female lead capable of protecting herself and others. It defeated damsel-in-distress tropes that were prevalent at the time, making Buffy a hero and source of inspiration for many women.
The same could be said of Melissa Benoist's character Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl. The CW show also showcases a lot of strong and complex female characters that break stereotypes. Cat Grant, who's one of the show's strong, independent women, is returning to the show this season, ScreenRant reported.
Jessica Jones
Jessica is another strong female character a lot of men and women can relate to and root for. She's a clever and courageous woman. Much like Buffy Summers, Jessica Jones was also a reluctant hero at the start of her show. Jessica is not a perfect hero, which makes her all the more realistic and relatable.
iZombie
While Jessica Jones and Supergirl mostly deal with superheroes and super-powered villains, "iZombie" tackles more of the supernatural. It tells the story of Liv, a zombie who works at a morgue where she gets her daily diet of brains. Whenever she eats a brain, she gets a glimpse into the life of the person who owned that brain as well as temporarily adapt some of that person's traits.
Supernatural
"Supernatural" is perhaps the closest to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" that there is on TV. As the title suggests, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester fight forces of evil and encounter supernatural elements almost on a day to day basis.
Crazyhead
Netflix's "Crazyhead" pretty much has a lot of the elements that made "BtVS" appealing to a lot of viewers. It has not just one, but two strong female leads that try to save the world from demons.
