Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, former NASA astronaut, posted an Instagram photo of himself at Stonehenge wearing a t-shirt reading "Get Your A-to Mars" earlier this week. The t-shirt of the outspoken Aldrin included a background of a NASA-like logo, implying that the organization should make manned missions to Mars a priority.
The background in the photo revealed that Aldrin was at Stonehenge. The prehistoric monument in the UK has been featured in several movies and TV shows such as "Ancient Aliens."
Aldrin became the second person to step onto the moon in 1969. He was also a member of the space missions Gemini 12 and Apollo 11.
Besides being a former astronaut, Aldrin has earned a PhD In astronautics. He has also done consulting work for the U.S. government, according to CNN.
Aldrin believes that the U.S. should have a long-term goal of starting human settlements on Mars. He wrote in a CNN article last year that the U.S. should start on the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the Moon--2019.
In fact, Aldrin has mentioned a scenario in which the U.S. president would commit to a human settlement on Mars. In that scenario the timeframe would be within "two decades."
NASA has officially stated that the target date for its first manned Mars mission is 2035. Until now it has only used rovers to take photos of the planet's landscape.
Aldrin would be 105 years old by that NASA's proposed date, according to Chron. Perhaps that is why he is eager for NASA to get its rear in gear about manned Mars missions.
