Teenagers are online, almost constantly, the Pew Research Center reported. With constant access to smartphones, 73 percent of teenagers are online constantly. Of the polled teens, 92 percent professed that they go online every single day. The majority of them, 56 percent are online a couple of times a day; however, 12 percent have expressed that they are limiting Internet use to one each day.
The research has also shed light on the differences of "online" status across ethnic and racial groups. To being online constantly:
- White teens: 19 percent
- Hispanic teens: 32 percent
- African-American teens: 34 percent
Amanda Lenhart, Pew Research Center associate director, said "American teens, especially African-American youth, have embraced smartphones and the 24/7 access to people and information that they offer."
Facebook ranks as the top social media service that teens are obsessed about. Majority of the polled population, 71 percent of 13-17 years olds are using the social networking site. Next to Facebook is Instagram, the photo-sharing network that gathered 52 percent of the surveyed population. Next in the ranks are Snapchat, 41 percent; Twitter, 33 percent; Google+, 33 percent, Vine, 24 percent; and Tumblr, 14 percent.
The Pew Research Center has also noted that teens are varying their use of social networking sites. Majority, 71 percent, have reported that they are into more than a single network over the seven site options that were presented to each one. 22 percent of them said that they are hooked to one site. The 66 percent revealed that Facebook is the only site they are using, 13 percent said they are loyal to Google +, 13 percent are addicted to Instagram, and 3 percent enjoy Snapchat.
The study also analyzed usage and connectivity among different household incomes, the LA Times wrote.
