It was found out that acidic currents in oceans may lead to the worst mass extinction in world's history as they trigger massive volcanic eruptions.
The phenomenon also exacerbates the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere causing a severe change in the climatic condition in the current time period, according to National Monitor.
Rachel Wood, who is a geoscientist at University of Edinburgh said that the past incident of acidification of oceans can help in understanding the process. She also added that, currently, the marine animals are also being threatened by the acidification of oceans.
Acidification of oceans have taken place 252 million years ago and it wiped away the 90 percent of the marine species that time. In addition, it also wiped out about two thirds of the animal species which walked the surface of the earth, Science Daily stated.
Carbon dioxide emissions are absorbed by the oceans in huge amounts. This leads to the change of the composition of the ocean water, making it highly acidic and proving absolutely catastrophic for the planet earth.
The modern day acidification is causing a similar threat to our planet, and this study is helping the researchers to document the present day effects of the greenhouse gases on the water of the oceans; which can in turn help them to identify the chief causes that are harmful to earth's future. This study is helping them to take an initiative towards stopping the chain of events which can lead to a disaster.
The project is chiefly funded by International Centre for Carbonate Reservoirs.
