After letting fans have a glimpse on the photos released for the upcoming "Fantastic Four," Josh Trank gave a tease on what the movie's nature will be like. He said that the film is to showcase a darker tone.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director said that "Fantastic Four" finds itself at the middle of Steven Spielberg and Tim Burtin, in which he calls it "Dark Amblin." As Trank told "X-Men: Days of Future Past" producer Simon Kinberg, the film aims to terrifying and very realistic to the audience at the same time.
Trank wants his "Fantastic Four" adaptation to unleash the concept of defining oneself, one being able to manipulate destiny in transition from being dependent.
Also, Trank is known for his 2012's "Chronicle," which centered on three high school friends gaining extraordinary powers after a discovery. The incident changed their lives while their bond as friends was challenged as they plunge to their darker sides. The director described "Chronicle" as the transformation and intensification of unique powers, then he said that in "Fantastic Four," such extraordinary powers will be viewed as a "curse."
The film will star Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, and Michael Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human Torch.
Mara compares the story to getting into a car accident, in which a part of a person is "different" for his entire life. Meanwhile, Jordan compared the upcoming film to baking a cake, with the "ingredients" being complete to create something "special." He added that they just have to wait and witness for the outcome of the cake.
It will be easy "Fantastic Four" to view the superpowers as a curse or a burden if coming from the right standpoint, as per Cinema Blend. The film attempts its audience to connect with the characters' feelings as they embrace their extraordinary abilities and transformations - one's skin bursting into flames, one's body turning into rock, one's arms turning into rubber. The audience's connection to the characters will make them appreciate the story and the film.
The film centers on four young scientists obtaining superhuman abilities following a teleportation experiment. Along with Trank and Kinberg, the film will be co-produced by Stan Lee, Gregory Goodman, Avi Arad, Cliff Lanning, Matthew Vaughn, Hutch Parker, and Mark Millar. Jack Kirby and Jeremy Slater are also in charge of the script along with Kinberg and Lee.
A full trailer is expected to be seen on May 1, the premiere date of "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
"Fantastic Fours" is slated to premiere in theaters on Aug. 7.
