Three Beluga whales were spotted in the Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. These whales are native to the Arctic Circle and places like Rhode Island are not considered to be a part of their natural habitat.
This immediately drew the attention of many researchers and they travelled to the ocean state to take a look at this marvel. Researchers try to put them into categories, in order to analyze their behavior and habits. They are looking at the whales' body condition and other parts in order to get to know them better, scientifically.
David DeSalvo shot the video which captures these rare whales as they swim in the river, off the Coast of Jamestown Rhode Island, according to WTNH News. They were also spotted in the Taunton River last year, around the same time, Stamford Advocate reported.
The researchers suspect that since the water is so cold in and around the Arctic Circle, these whales started to migrate towards warmer regions. The large and early influx of the squids in the natural habitat of Beluga whales is also a possible reason of the migration. The presence of squids is forcing the whales to fight for their food. In addition, the warmer areas like the Rhode Island is known to be more abundant in food varieties for species like the Beluga whales.
While seeing Beluga whales can be a fascinating and rare experience, the public is advised to keep distance from this species as they can attack human beings easily.
