A recent leak reveal that chip manufacturer Qualcomm is working on a 10-core processor. Rumor has it that the chip codenamed Snapdragon 818 will power next generation Android devices.
The leak surfaced just days after Qualcomm's closest competitor, MediaTek, unveiled its own 10-core processor codenamed Helio X20.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 818, just like the Helio X20, is also divided into three separate clusters depending on their computing power and is also using the 20nm processing technology. Snapdragon 818's 10-core is divided into four low-powered 1.2GHz Cortex-A53 processor, two mid-powered 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 processor and four high-powered 2.0GHz Cortex A72 processor. According to Fudzilla, Snapdragon 818 will have LPDDR4 RAM and Adreno 532 GPU support.
If these rumors are true, the upcoming chip from Qualcomm will be able to run LTE Cat-10 once released on the market. Additionally, the presence of the Cortex A72 could only mean that Qualcomm is trying to create a chip that focuses on high power performance.
Industry experts are also speculating that Qualcomm is trying to win back Samsung through its 10-core processor. Recently, the South Korea-based tech giant ceased using Qualcomm's processor and instead integrated its smartphone products by its own Exynos chipset.
Before the rumors about the 10-core Snapdragon 818 has surfaced, Qualcomm has already confirmed that it is developing a new processor codenamed Snapdragon 820. According to Ecumenical News, it will make use of the custom Kryo core design. Currently, Qualcomm still uses the ARM design in all its processors including the rumored Snapdragon 818.
Samsung stated that the upcoming Snapdragon 820 has an integrated software that will patch the alleged overheating problem affecting most of its processors, especially the 64-bit Snapdragon 810.
