State-owned telecom company China Mobile has started with its campaign calling its mobile service subscribers to register using their real names, according to an article published on technologynewschina.com.
The article said that the campaign was launched in compliance with the new laws of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology making it compulsory for a subscriber to use his real name when registering with a mobile service provider.
China Mobile said that they have asked some subscribers to register their phone number and real name before the deadline on May 31 by sending reminders.
The report said that some subscribers in Guangzhou City in Guangdong Province have received massages saying that services will be stopped if they fail to register their real name before the deadline.
Those who failed to comply will not be able send text messages or make outgoing calls, and they will only be allowed to receive calls and messages for a limited period of time after the deadline.
The company said that those who have not yet registered with their real name after the deadline will receive another reminder, and if they still do not comply and register, all the mobile services will be stopped for their numbers.
China Mobile said that users will receive a notification of the deadline through a text message and the deadline for registration varies with each individual subscribers.
A report by Nanfang Metropolis Daily said that China Unicom and China Telecom, the other two major telecommunications companies in the country, have not complied with the mandatory registration.
The registration for mobile phones using the subscribers' real name will help prevent mobile fraud, which results in losses amounting to tens of billions of yuan per year, the report added.
