Keen, a Chinese hacking group, hopes to release an iOS 9 jailbreak this fall, according to reports. China's elite hacker crew has yet to release an iOS jailbreak and is looking for a possible collaboration with Pangu.
Liang Chen, one of the crew's researchers, said that they wanted to release their first ever jailbreak, possibly with the assistance of Team Pangu, according to Forbes.
China's elite Keen Team were earlier rewarded $27,500 and $40,000 for exploiting mobile Safari at the 2013 and 2014 Mobile Pwn2Own competitions. Also, they have released a tool for rooting Samsung's Galaxy S6, iDownloadBlog reported.
While there is excellent money in releasing jailbreaks, Chen is more interested in the technical challenge. Chinese app stores frequently pay researchers for these jailbreaks, so that when a user download a hack, they are offered the option to install the third-party marketplace.
The Keen team is planning to reach out to the well-known Pangu Team for assistance. However, they have no plans to work with the Chinese group TaiG, who are currently working on an iOS 9 jailbreak. TaiG was responsible for the untethered jailbreak in iOS 8.2. The Pangu team has demonstrated an iOS 8.3 jailbreak; however, its release is still not known.
Chen said that he may hand over vulnerabilities to bug bounty organizations such as HP's ZDI Initiative or keep them for future hacking contests. He might also inform the software company Apple first. With Apple increasing security in every iOS update, stronger partnership among teams is required to help find vulnerabilities and convert them into jailbreaks.
