Was it a real good luck wish or veiled sarcasm? While unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. may appear to be wishing UFC Women's Welterweight Champion Ronda Rousey well, media sees it instead as a continuation of the verbal war between the two fighters from different sports.
This is because in response to Ronda's comment during a Reddit Ask Me Anything Chat on Monday that she could beat Floyd in a fight with no rules, Mayweather said, "Whoever she is ... I wish her nothing but the best. Good luck with everything," quotes SI. It could have been a nice message, except for the first part when he feigned knowing Ronda.
Like Mayweather, Ronda is unbeaten and has a 0 loss record, although she has only 12 wins versus Floyd's 48, which could go up to 49 if he beats Haitian boxer Andre Berto on September 12. However, Ronda is the toast of the athletic world now for her winning over opponent Bethe Correia at UC 190 in just 34 seconds.
In contrast, Mayweather's May 2 bout against Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao, while he won in a unanimous decision, was controversial because many fans were not convinced with the decision and he not only failed to knock out Pacquiao but was criticized for doing nothing except run away from Pacquiao in 12 rounds that earned him $260 million.
Mayweather is using the fact that he earns so much, making him the highest-paid celebrity in Forbes list the past 12 months, in belittling Ronda when he said that the MMA fighter should only challenge him to a fight when she earns as much as he does.
However, Ronda is catching up by being named 8th highest-paid female athlete with an income of $5 million the past year. She also got the Athlete of the Year award from ESPY.
The public is watching the next fight of the two athletes. For Mayweather, it would be his last professional fight which many boxing observers believe would not earn sell well on pay-per-view because PPV buyers felt shortchanged with the high fee they paid on May 2.
In contrast, UFC President Dana White forecasts that Ronda's speculated match against Cris "Cyborg" Justino would sell at least 2.5 million PPV buys. Amid the talk of a Justino-Rousey fight, Miesha Tate, ranked at the top of the division after four consecutive wins, is waiting for official word if she will slug it out with Ronda later this year, reports Fox Sports.
A few weeks ago, White said Tate is next in line for a bout against Rousey, but he did not provide an exact date and location.
