Verizon is likely to add vanilla Android flagships to its offerings soon as new reports say that the Moto X 2015 Pure Edition and Moto X Play will be carried by the Big Red carrier. Another Motorola device, the Nexus 6, is also set to join the 2015 Verizon device lineup.
The Moto X 2015 on Verizon, however, will take a different name though a familiar one for long-time Verizon subscribers. The new Motorola flagship will be offered by the telco as the refreshed DROID Turbo as suggested by a report from Android Police.
The blog report indicated that Verizon will soon unpack its two DROID smartphones - the DROID Turbo and the DROID Maxx 2. The latter was even represented in a leaked picture, sitting side by side with the Moto X Play, the back cover peeled off.
Looking closely, one would see that the Maxx 2 and Moto X Play are identical and even the specifications provided are the same. The Maxx 2 is said to boast of Snapdragon 615 SoC processor, 5.5-inch 1080p screen, 2GB of RAM, 21MP rear camera and a massive 3630mAh battery.
The Moto X Play is listed with the same specs. While no details of the DROID Turbo were given, it is assumed that the specs and features will take a leaf from what were revealed with the Moto X 2015.
And the Verizon DROID starting price of $400 also sounds familiar, which is for the Maxx 2 as the Turbo being the premium make is expected to sell at a higher price.
The handsets' availability was not discussed in the report though reports are saying that Motorola and its retail/distributing partners will begin selling the 2015 Moto X on September 3.
But before that day, mobile device users planning to migrate to Verizon with their chosen smartphones can start doing so. Of particular focus are owners of the Nexus 6 that according to 9to5Google can now be activated on Verizon.
In registering the Nexus 6, users need to ensure that the device is unlocked and once that is determined they will need to purchase compatible plans with the phone or SIM card prior to activation.
Effectively, Verizon will have three Motorola smartphones running on pure Android operating system, all set to slug out with the two handsets to come out of Google's Nexus 2015 release date plans - the LG Nexus 5 2015 and the Huawei Nexus 6 2015.
